We’ve just booked another outing, a week’s stay at Paradise in Portugal, a Quinta near Saboia in the south of Portugal.
The lodge is a combination of rural retreat and birdwatching immersion. It’s on the shore of a reservoir and we will probably have dark skies for night photography too. Frank, the owner and birding guide, will take us into the plains of the Alentejo with the hopes of seeing Great Bustards and Little Bustards. We’ll also visit salt pans in Faro for a selection of waterbirds. At the Quinta itself, they have bird blinds (called hides by British speakers) for closeup observation of golden orioles and kingfishers and everything else.
Can’t wait to see it, to be out in the countryside for several days, and to build our bird lists with guided help. An experienced leader can help with identifying the confusing larks, buntings, various nondescript warblers, and distant overhead hawks.
They are a sustainable establishment too, eco-friendly, running on solar energy, and advocates for local conservation of unspoiled habitats.
