Street Art

Lisbon is known for graffiti. It used to be illegal, but it seems to be embraced as part of the culture now. There are a lot of public murals too. The flat stucco walls of the buildings are natural canvases. Here are examples that give color to otherwise plain buildings, bus stops, and old walls.

The octopus stairs lead from the Estrada Marginal highway down into the tunnel passageway to the Caxias beach.
The tunnel gives us quick access to beach. The tunnel leads back into our neighborhood. The ramp leads up to the highway and sidewalk that goes along the shore from Lisboa to Cascais.

There is some less appealing graffiti, mostly in the form of bad words that seem to be an “artist’s” signature. I won’t give that any more publicity by showing it here.

  1. The mural is fun! The graffitti on the ugly walls makes those walls less of an eyesore, but the graffiti on the beautiful stonework just trashes what is wonderful.

There are many more murals around the city, as well as tile art in the metro stations. I need to collect some photos for another post.
