Pronouncing our town

Our Portugal apartment is in Caxias, which is part of Oeiras, a administrative district just west of Lisboa. We are a couple of blocks from the beach and the train station. There’s a walled tidal brook flowing to the sea at the end of our block.

By the way, we needed help to learn the pronunciation of the name of our neighborhood. Here’s how to say it: Cuh-SHEE-ish. X can be “sh” or “zh” or even “z”. Lots to learn. And Oeiras is oo-AIR-ish, but not with an American accent. “ei” is a tricky combo, leaning toward “i” but not quite. Even Lisboa is tricky for us Americans. It’s Lizh-BO-uh.
