Aug 28 Venice

We slept in and took the #5 bus to Venice at noon. Pam forgot her sunglasses, so we bought another pair at one of the many vendor booths along the main canal. We had an OK lunch of pasta at one of the restaurants along the main tourist route.  We went looking for the excellent gelato and sorbetto shop called SUSO, but we were confused. The place we found, with the right sign, looked totally different than we remembered from a week ago. Did the shops that were closed on Sunday, with shutters down, make the street seem much narrower?

We got to Piazza San Marco and bought beverages at the café near the gondola docks so that we could just sit and absorb the ambience. San Marco looked much more worn that I remembered from 2012. Surprisingly though, there was no evidence of any recent flooding. Apparently, they finally finished the harbor barrier project, successfully reducing flooding by closing the barrier.

We tried to walk back – it’s actually pretty far – but Google Maps led us to a canal crossing where the canal ferry had ended for the day (it ended at 7pm and it was around 7:15). Arghh, Google! So we bought vaporetto tickets to Piazzale Roma and caught a #5 bus back to Tessera.
